FINNIPS entrance exams in Warsaw

Last week I had the privilege to supervise entrance exams for candidates to Finnish universities of applied sciences, this time in Warsaw in Poland. The exams are organised by the FINNIPS network for the whole of Finland and attendants came from Poland, the Czech Republic, Moldova, Slovenia and the Ukraine.

- I'm glad we actually made it here, despite the global situation as it stands at the moment, said Oles and Taras, brothers from the Ukraine who hope to start international business studies in Finland in August.

Long days with 3-4 hours of exam at a time. Water, water, water...

In the group interview part of the exam the hopeful candidates shared their hopes and dreams in their future field of  study. Most already had some experience through spending a few months in Finland as an Erasmus exchange student, or already had friends or family studying in Finland.

For myself, this was a first-time experience which I shared with a colleague from KYAMK. Thankfully he had lived in Poland for six years, one of which was in Warsaw. I got a good overview of the city in the brief free hours of each evening, with a travel planner right next to  me... thanks Jori!

If you have a chance to go for a similar assignment abroad, I sincerely recommend you take it!

Admission 2013: Media Programme pre-task available

Next application period for our four Bachelor's programmes run in English - Environmental Engineering  International Business, Media and  Nursing - starts on January 7. Applicants for media have to prepare and send a pre-task in addition to the regular application. The pre-task is now online.

• In 2013 they will be the first to report from the newly found Atlantis!

They are applicants of IMP, our international media programme.

This year there will be more free seats and more options, the Music Production education in Virrat will merge with Media Programme in Tampere.

There will be 30 seats available for new students instead of the 20 until now. After the merger and the new curriculum the areas of study of IMP will be: Event Production, Game Design, Motion Graphics, Music Production, Music Business, Sound Design, Visual Design, Web Design.

Media Programme application pre-task online!

Application period for the international degree programmes of Finnish UAS is January 9 to February 14 2012.
For the Degree Programme in Media it is not enough that applicants fill in the online form, they also have to complete and send by the deadline a pre-task with two assignments.

The 60 eligible applicants having most points will be invited to the entrance exam 17th or 18th April, and finally 20 of them will start their Bachelor of Culture and Arts studies at Finlayson Campus right in the centre of Tampere in August.

The focus of the four year programme is in interactive media content design and production. The students learn about current digital media issues and they specialise in visual design, interaction design or project management.

Media Entrance Exam 2011 done

The annual Entrance Exam to IMP, our Degree Programme in Media took place this week. Invitations went to 61 best applicants and 53 of them participated in the one day exam on Tuesday and Wednesday. Some applicants could not come due to the clampdown of Finnish visa-policy. Candidates represented Bangladesh, China, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iraq, Italy, Latvia, Mexico, Pakistan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Spain, UK and the USA. There were again more applicants than before, and first time more international than Finnish applicants.

The Entrance Exam had four parts: an interview to recognize motivation and suitability, a pitch to identify the ability to generate original ideas and promote them, and writing a fairy tale to see if the applicants have imagination and a gift of story telling and writing. The fourth assignment was to either design a cover page for the fairy tale or to design a game based on the fairy tale.

The competition was again harder than ever. Our lecturers have analyzed the results yesterday, and today all scores have been double checked. The results will be announced simultaneously with the results of international degree programmes of all Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences on May 30.

On August 16th 24 new IMPs will start studies in Degree Programme of Media.

TAMK’s English degree programmes again increased popularity

The number of applicants to Tampere University of Applied Sciences increased by more than 10 per cent compared with last year. Tourism was TAMK’s most popular degree programme in the joint application for degree programmes conducted in English. The national joint application for English degree programmes ended on 15 February.

TAMK had 1119 primary applicants this year. The most popular degree programme was Tourism with 258 primary applicants (12.9 applicants/study place). The Degree Programme in Media had 195 primary applicants (9.8 applicants/study place), International Business 366 primary applicants (9.2 applicants/study place), Nursing 136 primary applicants (8.5 applicants/study place), and Environmental Engineering 164 primary applicants (5.5 applicants/study place).

In all, there were more than 3000 applicants for TAMK’s five English degree programmes. The educations starting in the autumn 2011 offered a total of 126 study places. The joint application data are based on the Finnish National Board of Education’s current statistics.

Joint application for the Finnish education and master’s degree programmes begins on 7 March and expires on 12 April. It is also possible to apply for TAMK’s English Master’s Degree Programme in Information Technology through separate application.

Only two days to go: Application time closes Tuesday!

Merged TAMK is the most popular Finnish UAS

TAMK's slogan "the joy of sussing out" attracted most primary applicants per study place of Finnish UAS.

TAMK´s Finnish youth education degree programmes starting in the autumn 2010 had 8450 primary applicants. There were 5.8 primary applicants per study place. Tampere University of Applied Sciences and Pirkanmaa University of Applied Sciences merged at the beginning of 2010. The merged TAMK was the most popular Finnish university of applied sciences in the joint application of the spring.

The Degree Programme in Emergency Care had the most primary applicants with each of its 20 study places being pursued by 26 primary applicants. Fine Art and Physiotherapy had more than 15 primary applicants, Hotel and Restaurant Management 14 primary applicants and Social Services 13 primary applicants per study place.

By number of applicants, TAMK´s most popular degree programmes were: Business Administration, 1266 primary applicants, Social Services, 804 primary applicants, Physiotherapy, 612 primary applicants, Nursing and Health Care, 640 primary applicants, and Emergency Care, 527 primary applicants. In all, TAMK had more than 22 000 applicants to the 1465 free study places in education starting in the autumn.

In TAMK´s campuses outside Tampere, the most popular degree programmes were Tourism in Ikaalinen, Media in Virrat and Nursing and Health Care in Mänttä-Vilppula.
Plenty of applicants also to adult education

In the joint application to adult education, the 292 study places had 1220 primary applicants, that is more than 4 primary applicants per study place. The nursing education in Sastamala had the most primary applicants with 191 applicants to its 20 study places.

By number of applicants, the most popular degree programme was Business Administration with 308 primary applicants to Tampere and Virrat. Mechanical and Production Engineering in Tampere and Sastamala had 178 primary applicants. The 25 study places of Construction Management had 134 primary applicants, and the 30 study places of Service Management 119 primary applicants.

The master´s degree programmes had 360 primary applicants to the 215 study places. Ten master´s degree programmes will begin in TAMK in the autumn.

For the first time, the national joint application to youth education, adult education and master´s degrees in universities of applied sciences took place at the same time. The closing date for joint application to education beginning in the autumn was 16 April.

Joint application for degree programmes taught in Finnish begins!

The joint application for universities of applied sciences begins in the beginning of March, and there are 2012 study places available in TAMK for degree programmes taught in Finnish beginning in autumn of 2010. In addition to Tampere, there are study places available in Ikaalinen, Mänttä-Vilppula, Sastamala and Virrat.

The majority of the study places for degree programmes taught in Finnish, 1465, are in the youth education degree programmes. There are 312 places available in the adult education degree programmes and 235 places in the Master’s degree programmes. The most number of study places, 776, are offered by the degree programmes of technology. There are 475 study places available in the degree programmes of social services and health, 275 in business and administration, 171 in culture, 140 in tourism, catering and domestic services, 138 in business systems administration and 37 in forestry.


The application for the Finnish degree programmes beginning in the autumn of 2010 is carried out as an on-line application in www.amkhaku.fi. The application period is 1.3-16.4. For the first time, the national joint application covers youth education degree programmes, adult education degree programmes and Master’s degree programmes all at the same time.


TAMK has 255 study places outside Tampere

The majority of TAMK’s study places are in Tampere. There are 115 study places offered by TAMK’s Ikaalinen campus, in the degree programmes of Business Administration, Business Information Systems and Tourism. Virrat offers 40 study places in Media, and 20 study places in Business Administration as adult education. Mänttä-Vilppula also offers 20 study places in Business Administration and 20 study places in Well-being services.

An engineering degree programme will also begin in Sastamala next autumn. The degree programme utilises blended learning and enables persons with vocational qualifications in engineering or as a technician to supplement their degree into a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering. Last autumn, a degree programme in nursing was also launched in Sastamala, and 20 study places will be available for the degree programme in nursing which begins next autumn as well.


New degree programmes

The new TAMK formed by the merged PIRAMK University of Applied Sciences and TAMK University of Applied Sciences offers four new Finnish Master’s degree programmes in the fields of well-being technology, clinical nursing, social services and service business. The degree programme in Service Business is implemented in collaboration with JAMK University of Applied Sciences.

Tourism most attractive in TAMK

Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK) had 1018 primary applicants to its English degree programmes starting in the autumn 2010. There were 8.1 primary applicants per study place. TAMK was the third most popular university of applied sciences in Finland. The closing date for applications was Friday 12 February.

Degree Programme in Tourism was the most popular English degree programme in TAMK. It had 230 primary applicants (11.5 applicants/study place). Degree Programme in Media had 181 primary applicants (9.1 applicants/study place), International Business 335 primary applicants (8.4 applicants/study place), Nursing 115 primary applicants (7.2 applicants/study place) and Environmental Engineering 157 primary applicants (5.2 applicants/study place).

In all, there were 2571 applicants to TAMK´s five degree programmes conducted in English. The number of open study places is 126.

TAMK had more Finnish applicants than other universities of applied sciences according to the national statistics.

The joint application data are based on the Finnish National Board of Education´s current statistics.

The Joy of Sussing Out - Apply to TAMK

The application period to degree programmes run in English of Finnish universities of applied sciences will start on Monday January 11th.

This is already visible in the streets of Tampere; Tampere UAS rallies the campaign with the slogan "Oivaltamisen iloa", the "joy of sussing out" on the posters in central spots of the city.

The merger of TAMK UAS and PIRAMK UAS is implemented today with the new year 2010. The new Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK) is born. Five degree programmes completely taught in English welcome applications until February 12.

Pre-task for Media Programme Application Now Online

Next application time for our BA programmes run in English is January 11 - February 12.

For the Media Programme it is not enough that applicants fill in the online form and send the certificates, they also have to complete and send by the deadline a pre-task with three assignments.

60 applicants with best points for the pre-task are invited to the entrance exam in April.

The focus of the programme is in interactive media content design and production. The students learn about current digital media issues and they specialise in visual design, interaction design or project management.

The areas of application include web design and services, games, mobile media, multimedia, cross media and interactive installations.

The Degree Programme in Media started this autumn at TAMK School of Art and Media. The working language of the programme is only English. The first edition of students are coming from China, Iran, Peru, South Africa, Greece, Serbia, UK and most of them from Finland. The programme is also known as IMP.
